Description

A delightful Apple Pie Fillo Cake combining the flaky crispness of fillo dough with sweet, spiced apple filling, layered and baked to golden perfection. This dessert offers a unique twist on classic apple pie, delivering a light, crunchy texture with warm cinnamon and nutmeg-infused apples, perfect for cozy gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 6 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Fillo Layers

  • 1 package fillo dough
  • Additional melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature while you prepare the filling and dough.
  2. Prepare Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the peeled and sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter. Toss everything together to coat the apples evenly with the sweet spices and butter.
  3. Layer Fillo Dough: Grease your baking pan well. Begin layering the fillo dough sheets in the pan, brushing each layer generously with melted butter to ensure crisp, flaky texture.
  4. Add Filling: Once you’ve layered about half of the fillo sheets, spread the apple mixture evenly over the dough. If using, sprinkle chopped walnuts over the apple filling for added crunch and flavor.
  5. Top with More Fillo: Continue layering the remaining fillo sheets on top of the apple filling, brushing each sheet with melted butter as before to create a golden crust.
  6. Bake: Place the assembled cake in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the fillo dough is golden brown and crisp, and the apples are tender.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and allow the cake to cool before slicing. This helps the flavors meld and makes serving easier. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Ensure to keep fillo dough covered with a damp cloth while assembling to prevent it from drying out and tearing.
  • Adding chopped walnuts is optional but adds a lovely texture contrast.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgence.
  • For a lighter sweetener option, reduce the sugar or substitute with honey or maple syrup according to taste.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
