Description

This Beef and Onion Stir Fry is a quick and flavorful Asian-inspired dish featuring tender slices of flank steak cooked with caramelized onions in a savory sauce made with soy, oyster, and hoisin sauces. Perfect for a weeknight dinner, it comes together in just 25 minutes and is best served with steamed rice or noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Marinade

  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Sauce Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Other Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil (divided, 1 tsp used in marinade)
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • Sliced green onions and sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef: In a medium bowl, combine the beef slices with 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon cornstarch, and 1 teaspoon sesame oil. Toss to coat thoroughly and let it marinate for 15 minutes to tenderize and infuse flavor.
  2. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining 1 tablespoon soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, beef broth or water, sugar, and black pepper. Set aside for later use.
  3. Cook the Beef: Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes until it is just browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside to prevent overcooking.
  4. Cook the Onions: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil to the pan. Stir-fry the thinly sliced onions for 3 to 4 minutes until they become softened and lightly caramelized, enhancing their natural sweetness.
  5. Add Aromatics: Stir in the minced garlic and ginger, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant to add depth to the dish.
  6. Combine and Finish Cooking: Return the partially cooked beef to the pan, pour in the prepared sauce mixture, and stir-fry together for an additional 2 minutes. Cook until the beef is fully cooked through and the sauce thickens slightly to coat all ingredients nicely.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot with steamed white rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For the most tender beef, slice it thinly against the grain to break up muscle fibers.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with steamed white rice or noodles for a satisfying meal.
  • You can add extra vegetables such as bell peppers or broccoli for added nutrition and color.
  • Ensure high heat for quick cooking to keep the beef tender and juicy.
