Ingredients
Scale
Mashed Potatoes
- 2 pounds russet potatoes (peeled and cut into chunks)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup whole milk (warmed)
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Beef Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Cook Potatoes: Place the peeled and chunked potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
- Mash Potatoes: Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter, warmed milk, sour cream, salt, and black pepper. Mash together until the potatoes are smooth and creamy.
- Prepare Gravy Roux: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, forming a roux to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Add Broth and Spices: Slowly whisk in the beef broth, stirring constantly to keep the mixture smooth. Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper to the mixture.
- Simmer Gravy: Let the gravy simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Serve: Spoon the creamy mashed potatoes onto plates and generously pour the warm beef gravy over the top. Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For extra creaminess, substitute heavy cream for part of the milk in the mashed potatoes.
- Use pre-made beef broth or drippings from a roast for a richer gravy flavor and to save time.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for added color and freshness.
- To make this dish gluten-free, replace the all-purpose flour in the gravy with cornstarch.
