Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (about 110 degrees Fahrenheit)
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
Filling Ingredients
- 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage or cooked bacon (optional)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 large eggs, scrambled (optional)
Finishing Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon melted butter for brushing
- 1 tablespoon chopped chives (optional)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Mix Dough Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt. Stir the yeast mixture into this until well combined.
- Add Flour and Form Dough: Gradually add the all-purpose flour, starting with 2 1/2 cups, mixing until a soft dough forms. Add more flour as needed to achieve a soft but workable dough.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Prepare Filling and Roll Dough: After rising, punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Evenly spread the scrambled eggs, cooked sausage or bacon, and shredded cheddar cheese over the dough, if using.
- Form Rolls: Roll the dough tightly from one long side, pinching the seam to seal. Cut the roll into 8 to 10 equal-sized pieces.
- Second Rise: Place the rolls cut side up in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 20 to 30 minutes until puffy.
- Preheat Oven: While the rolls are rising, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
- Brush with Butter and Bake: Brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the rolls from the oven, sprinkle with chopped chives if desired, and serve warm for a satisfying breakfast.
Notes
- You can prepare the rolls the night before, refrigerate after shaping, and bake fresh in the morning.
- Add vegetables such as spinach or bell peppers to the filling for extra flavor and nutrition.
- These rolls freeze well once baked and cooled; simply thaw and reheat before serving.
