Description

Indulge in a classic Southern comfort dish with this recipe for Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits. Rich, velvety chocolate gravy served over warm, flaky biscuits makes for a delightful breakfast or dessert treat.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chocolate Gravy:

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt

For the Biscuits (or use store-bought):

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Make the Biscuits: Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in buttermilk just until combined. Turn dough out onto a floured surface, gently knead 2–3 times, and pat into a 1-inch-thick round. Cut into circles using a biscuit cutter. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden.
  2. Make the Chocolate Gravy: In a medium saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, flour, sugar, and salt. Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth. Place over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens to a gravy consistency (about 8–10 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla until melted and smooth.
  3. Serve: Serve the warm biscuits split open and generously topped with chocolate gravy.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use half-and-half in place of milk.
  • This Southern comfort classic also works well with sweetened whipped cream or sliced bananas.
