Description

The Classic Italian Muffuletta is a hearty sandwich layered with a flavorful olive salad, assorted meats, and cheeses, all packed within a round Italian loaf. This iconic sandwich originated in New Orleans and is a perfect blend of Italian and American flavors.

Bread:

  • 1 large round Italian loaf or boule (about 10 inches)

Olive Salad:

  • 1/2 cup (120 g) green olives, pitted and chopped
  • 1/2 cup (120 g) black olives, pitted and chopped
  • 1/4 cup (60 g) roasted red peppers, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons capers, rinsed
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Fillings:

  • 4 ounces (115 g) sliced provolone cheese
  • 4 ounces (115 g) sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 4 ounces (115 g) sliced mortadella
  • 4 ounces (115 g) sliced salami
  • 4 ounces (115 g) sliced ham
  • 4 ounces (115 g) sliced capicola

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread: Slice the loaf horizontally and hollow out some of the soft interior.
  2. Make olive salad: Combine olives, peppers, capers, oil, vinegar, oregano, and pepper. Spread half on bread.
  3. Layer fillings: Add cheeses, meats, and remaining salad. Top with bread.
  4. Chill and serve: Wrap, refrigerate for 1 hour, then slice and enjoy!
