Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup white sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the oven and pan. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan thoroughly to prevent the batter from sticking.
- Combine main ingredients. In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, milk, eggs, softened butter, baking powder, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir gently to moisten the mixture.
- Beat the batter. Use an electric mixer set to medium speed and beat the mixture for about 2 minutes until smooth and well combined, ensuring a creamy batter.
- Separate batter for marbling. Scoop out and reserve ¾ cup of the batter into a separate bowl. Pour the remaining batter into the prepared cake pan.
- Add cocoa to reserved batter. Stir the unsweetened cocoa powder into the reserved batter until the color is uniform and smooth.
- Create marble effect. Drop spoonfuls of the chocolate batter on top of the vanilla batter in the pan. Use a knife to gently swirl the two batters together, creating a classic marbled pattern without fully mixing them.
- Bake the cake. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean.
- Cool and serve. Allow the cake to cool briefly on a wire rack, then carefully invert it onto a serving plate or cooling rack. Let the cake cool completely before slicing and serving for best texture.
Notes
- Ensure the butter is softened at room temperature to blend well with other ingredients.
- Do not overmix the batter to keep the cake tender.
- The swirling technique can be adjusted for more or less marbling, depending on preference.
- Use a toothpick or skewer to test if the cake is fully baked before removing from the oven.
- This cake pairs wonderfully with a dusting of powdered sugar or a simple glaze if desired.
