Ingredients

Scale

Main Dish:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)

Optional:

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan. Sauté onion, add garlic, then stir in flour. Whisk in milk, cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Simmer until slightly thickened.
  3. Layering: Arrange half of the potatoes in the dish, pour half of the sauce. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce. Add cheese between layers if desired.
  4. Bake: Cover with foil, bake for 40 minutes. Uncover, bake for another 25–30 minutes until golden and potatoes are tender.
  5. Rest and Serve: Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if preferred.
