Description
Traditional Colombian arepas are simple, delicious cornmeal patties that are crispy on the outside and tender inside. Made with masa harina, salt, water, and optional cheese, these arepas are a versatile staple perfect for breakfast, snacks, or accompaniments to any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Arepa Dough
- 2 cups masa harina
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 cup cheese (optional, for cheesy arepas)
Instructions
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix together the masa harina and salt thoroughly to evenly distribute the salt throughout the cornmeal.
- Add Liquids: Gradually pour in the warm water and oil while stirring to form a smooth, pliable dough without lumps.
- Add Cheese (Optional): If using cheese, gently fold it into the dough until evenly incorporated without overworking the mixture.
- Shape Arepas: Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a disc approximately 1/2 inch thick and 3-4 inches in diameter.
- Cook on Skillet: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the arepas on the skillet and cook for 5 to 7 minutes on each side, or until each side is golden brown and a crispy crust forms.
- Serve: Serve the arepas warm. They can be enjoyed plain, with butter, or stuffed with various fillings of your choice.
Notes
- Be sure to use masa harina, not regular cornmeal, for authentic texture and flavor.
- Adjust water quantity as needed to get the right dough consistency—not too sticky, not too dry.
- Cook arepas over medium heat to ensure they cook through without burning outside.
- Cheese is optional but adds a delicious richness to the dough.
- Arepas can be grilled or baked as alternative cooking methods but stovetop skillet cooking is traditional and quick.
