Description

Cranberry Pecan Phyllo Spirals are delightful, golden-baked pastries featuring a sweet and nutty filling of dried cranberries, chopped pecans, brown sugar, and cinnamon wrapped in buttery phyllo dough. Perfect as a festive appetizer or dessert, these spirals offer a crunchy texture and rich flavor that’s sure to impress guests.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Phyllo Spirals

  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the spirals evenly.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the dried cranberries, chopped pecans, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the flavors.
  3. Prepare Phyllo Sheets: Unroll the phyllo dough carefully on a clean surface. Lay one sheet flat and brush it lightly with melted butter to keep it moist and add flavor.
  4. Layer Phyllo: Place a second phyllo sheet on top of the first and brush this layer with melted butter as well to build the layers.
  5. Add Filling: Spread a line of the cranberry and pecan mixture along one edge of the layered phyllo sheets, preparing it for rolling.
  6. Roll and Cut: Roll the phyllo tightly around the filling to form a log. Slice the rolled dough into smaller spiral pieces, about 1 to 1.5 inches thick.
  7. Prepare for Baking: Arrange the cut spirals on a baking sheet spaced slightly apart. Brush the tops of each spiral with the beaten egg wash to give them a shiny, golden finish.
  8. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the spirals turn golden brown and crispy.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove the spirals from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving to allow the filling to set and for easier handling.

Notes

  • Handle phyllo dough with care as it dries out quickly; keep sheets covered with a damp cloth when not in use.
  • You can substitute pecans with walnuts or almonds for a different nutty flavor.
  • For extra sweetness, drizzle with honey or dust with powdered sugar before serving.
  • These spirals can be prepared in advance and baked just before serving to maintain crispness.
