Ingredients
Scale
Brownie Batter
- 10 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup plus 1 ½ tablespoons cocoa powder
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- â…” cup flour
- 1 ½ tablespoons water
Cream Cheese Layer
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease or line a baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Melt Butter and Chocolate Chips: In a microwave-safe bowl or over a double boiler, melt together the butter and semisweet chocolate chips until smooth and combined.
- Mix Cocoa Powder and Sugars: Stir the cocoa powder, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and salt into the melted chocolate mixture until evenly incorporated.
- Add Eggs, Vanilla, and Flour: Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Then gently fold in the flour and water to form a smooth, thick brownie batter.
- Spread Batter in Dish: Pour about three-quarters of the brownie batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly to cover the bottom.
- Prepare Cream Cheese Layer: In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and continue beating until the mixture is creamy and well combined.
- Layer Cream Cheese Mixture: Carefully spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the layer of brownie batter in the baking dish.
- Swirl Remaining Batter: Drop spoonfuls of the remaining brownie batter over the cream cheese layer. Using a knife or skewer, swirl the brownie batter into the cream cheese gently, creating a marbled effect.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 35 to 40 minutes, or until the brownies are set but still slightly gooey in the center.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan before slicing into squares and serving.
Notes
- Ensure cream cheese is softened to room temperature for easier mixing.
- Do not overbake to preserve the gooey center texture.
- Use parchment paper for easier removal from the baking dish.
- The swirling can be customized for a more or less pronounced cream cheese pattern.
- For extra richness, add a pinch of espresso powder to the brownie batter.
