Ingredients
Scale
Onion Rings
- 1 large sweet onion
Batter and Coating
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup breadcrumbs
For Frying
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil recommended)
Instructions
- Prepare the Onion Rings: Slice the large sweet onion into even rings about ¼-inch thick. Separate the rings carefully and set them aside on a plate or tray.
- Prepare the Coating: In one bowl, thoroughly mix the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, beat together the large egg and milk until smooth. In a third bowl, pour the breadcrumbs ready for coating.
- Coat the Rings: Take each onion ring and first dip it into the flour mixture, ensuring it is fully coated. Then dip it into the egg and milk mixture, followed by rolling it in the breadcrumbs to cover completely. Repeat until all the onion rings are nicely coated.
- Fry the Rings: Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat, ensuring enough oil depth for deep frying. Once the oil reaches around 350°F (175°C), fry the onion rings in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Cook each batch for about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until they achieve a golden brown and crispy texture.
- Serve: Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with ketchup, mayonnaise, or your favorite dipping sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Maintain oil temperature to avoid greasy rings; use a kitchen thermometer if possible.
- For extra crispiness, double coat the rings by repeating the egg wash and breadcrumb step.
- Sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla work best for a mild, sweet flavor.
- Use fresh breadcrumbs or panko for crunchier texture.
- Drain rings thoroughly on paper towels to remove excess oil and keep them crispy.
