Ingredients
Scale
Potato Fries
- 4 large russet potatoes, sliced into thin strips
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Sloppy Joe Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef or turkey
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
Toppings
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) to prepare for baking the potato fries.
- Prepare Potato Fries: Toss the thinly sliced potato strips with olive oil, salt, and pepper until evenly coated. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet.
- Bake Fries: Bake the potatoes in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway through, until they are golden and crispy.
- Brown Meat: While the fries bake, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef or turkey and cook, breaking it apart, until browned and cooked through.
- Sauté Vegetables: Add the chopped onion, diced green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet with the meat. Cook until the vegetables are softened.
- Make Sloppy Joe Sauce: Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder into the meat mixture. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
- Assemble the Dish: Once potato fries are done, transfer them to a serving platter. Spoon the Sloppy Joe meat mixture evenly over the fries.
- Add Cheese: Optionally, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts.
- Garnish and Serve: Finish by sprinkling chopped fresh parsley over the dish before serving hot.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey with ground beef for a richer flavor or use a plant-based alternative for a vegetarian twist.
- For extra crispy fries, soak the potato strips in cold water for 30 minutes before baking, then pat dry.
- Adjust the chili powder amount to control the spice level.
- Leftover Sloppy Joe mixture can be refrigerated for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
- To make it gluten-free, ensure the Worcestershire sauce used is gluten-free.
