Description

Crispy Rice Paper Dumplings are a delightful Asian appetizer featuring a savory ground meat and vegetable filling wrapped in delicate rice paper and pan-fried to golden, crispy perfection. These dumplings combine tender textures with bold flavors, served ideally with a tangy dipping sauce for a perfect bite-sized treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 cup ground chicken or pork
  • 1 cup finely shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 cup grated carrot
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Wrapping

  • 12 sheets rice paper

Cooking

  • Vegetable oil for frying

Dipping Sauce

  • Dipping sauce of choice such as soy sauce mixed with rice vinegar and chili flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine the ground meat, shredded cabbage, grated carrot, green onions, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, and black pepper. Mix until well combined to create a flavorful and cohesive filling mixture.
  2. Soften the rice paper: Fill a shallow dish with warm water. Dip one rice paper sheet into the water for about 5 to 10 seconds until it becomes soft but still slightly firm to ensure easy handling without tearing.
  3. Assemble the dumplings: Place the softened rice paper on a clean surface and spoon about 1 to 2 tablespoons of filling onto the center. Fold the sides over the filling and roll tightly to form a small dumpling. Repeat this process with all remaining rice paper sheets and filling.
  4. Heat the oil: In a skillet over medium heat, heat a thin layer of vegetable oil. This will provide the perfect environment to crisp up the rice paper exterior without burning.
  5. Cook the dumplings: Place the dumplings seam side down in the skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until each side is golden brown and crispy, carefully flipping to avoid breaking the delicate wrappers.
  6. Drain excess oil and serve: Remove the cooked dumplings and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve warm alongside your preferred dipping sauce, such as a mix of soy sauce, rice vinegar, and chili flakes for added flavor.

Notes

  • Avoid oversoaking rice paper sheets; soaking too long makes them sticky and prone to tearing.
  • For a vegetarian option, substitute ground meat with finely chopped mushrooms or tofu.
  • To achieve extra crispiness, cook dumplings in batches and do not overcrowd the pan.
