Description

Crispy Rice Paper Dumplings are delightful Asian-inspired appetizers featuring a flavorful vegetable filling wrapped in delicate rice paper, then pan-fried to golden perfection. These vegan dumplings boast a crunchy exterior with a savory, tender vegetable center, perfect for serving with your favorite dipping sauces like soy, sweet chili, or hoisin.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
  • 1/2 cup grated carrots
  • 1/2 cup shiitake mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Wrappers

  • 12 rice paper wrappers

For Frying and Serving

  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Dipping sauce of choice (soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, or hoisin sauce)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: Finely chop the cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, and green onions. In a medium bowl, combine the chopped cabbage, grated carrots, mushrooms, green onions, minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce or tamari, sesame oil, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to create a well-seasoned filling.
  2. Soften the rice paper wrappers: Dip one rice paper wrapper into warm water for about 5 seconds until it becomes soft and pliable. Carefully lay it flat on a clean surface to prepare for filling.
  3. Assemble the dumplings: Place about 1 to 2 tablespoons of the vegetable filling in the center of the softened rice paper. Fold the sides over the filling, then roll it tightly into a dumpling shape, securing the filling inside. Repeat this process with the remaining wrappers and filling until all dumplings are assembled.
  4. Heat the oil: Pour about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil into a large skillet and heat it over medium heat until hot but not smoking.
  5. Fry the dumplings: Carefully place the dumplings in the hot oil in batches, frying each side for 2 to 3 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy. Use tongs to turn them gently to ensure even frying.
  6. Drain and serve: Remove the fried dumplings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Serve the crispy dumplings warm with your preferred dipping sauce such as soy sauce, sweet chili, or hoisin sauce.

Notes

  • Best served immediately to maintain their crispiness.
  • You can prepare the dumplings ahead of time and refrigerate for up to 2 hours before frying.
  • For a vegan option, ensure to use only vegetables for the filling and omit any animal-based ingredients.
  • Be careful not to soak the rice paper wrappers for too long, as they can become too soft and difficult to handle.
