Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 1 cup cold butter (unsalted or salted based on preference)
- 1 cup brown sugar (can be substituted with coconut sugar for a refined-sugar-free option)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (gluten-free flour can be used for a gluten-free version)
Caramel Pecan Layer
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk (no substitutes recommended)
- 1 cup pecans (swap with walnuts for a different nut flavor)
- 1 cup brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk) (replace with dark chocolate for a more intense flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare the crust: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Mix the cold butter, brown sugar, and all-purpose flour together until the mixture becomes crumbly. Press this crumbly mixture evenly into a lined baking dish to form the base.
- Pre-bake the crust: Place the baking dish with the crust mixture into the oven and bake for 10 minutes to set and slightly firm up the base.
- Make the caramel pecan layer: While the crust bakes, heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Combine the sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, and chopped pecans. Stir constantly for 5 to 10 minutes or until the mixture is smooth, bubbling, and thickened.
- Add caramel layer to crust: Pour the hot caramel and pecan mixture evenly over the pre-baked crust, spreading it out smoothly to cover the entire surface.
- Bake the caramel layer: Return the baking dish to the oven and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, allowing the caramel layer to set well on top of the crust.
- Add chocolate topping: Remove the baking dish from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel layer. Spread the melted chocolate into an even layer using a spatula.
- Cool and serve: Let the Turtle Bars cool completely at room temperature to allow the chocolate to set before cutting them into 12 squares and serving.
Notes
- For a refined-sugar-free version, substitute brown sugar with coconut sugar.
- To make the recipe gluten-free, replace all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
- Swap pecans with walnuts if preferred for a different nut flavor.
- Use dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet or milk chocolate for a richer chocolate taste.
- Make sure to cool the bars completely before cutting to avoid melting or crumbling.
