Description

These Decadent Turtle Bars combine a buttery shortbread crust with a luscious caramel pecan layer topped with melted chocolate chips, creating a sweet and indulgent treat perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1 cup cold butter (unsalted or salted based on preference)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (can be substituted with coconut sugar for a refined-sugar-free option)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (gluten-free flour can be used for a gluten-free version)

Caramel Pecan Layer

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (no substitutes recommended)
  • 1 cup pecans (swap with walnuts for a different nut flavor)
  • 1 cup brown sugar

Topping

  • 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk) (replace with dark chocolate for a more intense flavor)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crust: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Mix the cold butter, brown sugar, and all-purpose flour together until the mixture becomes crumbly. Press this crumbly mixture evenly into a lined baking dish to form the base.
  2. Pre-bake the crust: Place the baking dish with the crust mixture into the oven and bake for 10 minutes to set and slightly firm up the base.
  3. Make the caramel pecan layer: While the crust bakes, heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Combine the sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, and chopped pecans. Stir constantly for 5 to 10 minutes or until the mixture is smooth, bubbling, and thickened.
  4. Add caramel layer to crust: Pour the hot caramel and pecan mixture evenly over the pre-baked crust, spreading it out smoothly to cover the entire surface.
  5. Bake the caramel layer: Return the baking dish to the oven and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, allowing the caramel layer to set well on top of the crust.
  6. Add chocolate topping: Remove the baking dish from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel layer. Spread the melted chocolate into an even layer using a spatula.
  7. Cool and serve: Let the Turtle Bars cool completely at room temperature to allow the chocolate to set before cutting them into 12 squares and serving.

Notes

  • For a refined-sugar-free version, substitute brown sugar with coconut sugar.
  • To make the recipe gluten-free, replace all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • Swap pecans with walnuts if preferred for a different nut flavor.
  • Use dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet or milk chocolate for a richer chocolate taste.
  • Make sure to cool the bars completely before cutting to avoid melting or crumbling.
