Description

This French Onion Chicken recipe combines tender, juicy chicken breasts with a rich, savory onion sauce inspired by classic French onion soup. Caramelized onions, garlic, and a blend of beef and chicken broths create a deep flavor base, enhanced with Worcestershire sauce and balsamic vinegar. Topped with melted Gruyère and mozzarella cheeses, this dish delivers comforting, cheesy goodness perfect for a hearty weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Onion Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

Cheese Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Pat the chicken breasts dry, then season both sides evenly with salt, pepper, dried thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. Sear the Chicken: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken breasts and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side until nicely browned but not fully cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Caramelize the Onions: Lower heat to medium, add butter to the same skillet. Add thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown and caramelized. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Create the Sauce: Pour in beef broth and chicken broth, scraping up browned bits from the skillet to incorporate flavor. Add Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, dried thyme, and sugar (if using). Stir well and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes to reduce slightly.
  5. Combine and Simmer: Return the seared chicken breasts to the skillet, nestling them into the onion sauce. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10-12 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
  6. Add Cheese and Melt: Preheat the oven broiler. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère and mozzarella cheeses evenly over each chicken breast. Place the skillet under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
  7. Serve: Carefully remove from the oven and serve the French Onion Chicken hot, spooning extra onion sauce over the top.

Notes

  • Be careful when using the oven broiler; watch the cheese closely to prevent burning.
  • If you don’t have Gruyère cheese, Swiss cheese makes a good substitute.
  • The optional sugar helps balance the acidity from the vinegar and onions but can be omitted for a less sweet sauce.
  • For a richer flavor, use homemade beef broth if possible.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with crusty bread or mashed potatoes to soak up the onion sauce.
