Ingredients
Scale
Wet Ingredients
- 2 cups of milk
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 6 tablespoons of butter, melted
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups of flour
- Pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
For Frying and Serving
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Optional toppings: whipped cream, fresh fruit, chocolate sauce, or caramel sauce
Instructions
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter until you have a smooth, homogeneous mixture.
- Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in the salt, baking soda, and sugar. Gradually fold in the flour, mixing carefully until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
- Prepare the Batter Bag: Pour the batter into a gallon-sized Ziplock bag, seal it tightly, and set it aside while you heat the oil.
- Heat the Oil: In a frying pan, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom and heat it over medium heat until it’s hot enough for frying. You can test the temperature by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
- Form and Fry the Bites: Cut a small hole in one corner of the Ziplock bag and carefully squeeze the batter out to form small bite-sized circles into the hot oil. Fry for about 1 to 2 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown, then flip each bite and fry the other side until equally golden.
- Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the funnel cake bites from the oil and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Dust with a generous amount of powdered sugar and serve warm. Add optional toppings such as whipped cream, fresh fruit, or chocolate sauce if desired.
Notes
- Make sure the oil is sufficiently hot before frying to avoid greasy bites.
- Do not overcrowd the pan to ensure even frying and to maintain oil temperature.
- Use a thermometer to keep the oil around 350°F (175°C) for best results.
- The batter can be made ahead and refrigerated, but bring it to room temperature before frying.
- Experiment with different toppings for varied flavors.
