Description

Garbage Bread is a savory, cheesy stuffed bread filled with seasoned ground beef, crispy bacon, tangy onions, and gooey Velveeta cheese, all wrapped in thin crust pizza dough and baked to golden perfection. This hearty, crowd-pleasing dish is perfect as a comforting appetizer or main course for gatherings and family meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat & Seasonings

  • 1/2 pound chopped bacon
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning (e.g., McCormick)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Vegetables

  • 1 cup chopped onion

Dairy & Cheese

  • 12 ounces Velveeta, cubed
  • 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

Dough & Condiments

  • 1 (13.8 ounce) thin crust pizza dough (e.g., Pillsbury)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup

Instructions

  1. Cook the bacon and onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the 1/2 pound chopped bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon and set aside on paper towels to drain excess fat. In the same skillet with bacon fat, sauté the chopped onion until translucent and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.
  2. Brown the ground beef: Add the lean ground beef to the skillet with onions. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned and no longer pink, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Season the meat mixture: Stir in the steak seasoning, salt, and pepper to the cooked beef mixture. Add the cooked bacon back in and mix well to combine.
  4. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the stuffed bread.
  5. Prepare the dough: Roll out the thin crust pizza dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. In the center of the dough, spread a thin layer of mayonnaise and ketchup mixture evenly.
  6. Assemble the filling: Layer the cooked ground beef mixture over the condiments on the dough. Evenly distribute the cubed Velveeta and sprinkle the grated cheddar jack cheese over the meat.
  7. Fold and seal the dough: Carefully fold the dough edges up and over the filling, pinching the edges to seal tightly so the filling doesn’t spill out while baking.
  8. Bake the bread: Place the sealed dough in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese inside is melted and bubbly.
  9. Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and allow the Garbage Bread to cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm as an indulgent appetizer or main dish.

Notes

  • You can substitute Velveeta with a combination of cream cheese and mild cheddar for a less processed option.
  • For extra flavor, add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce to the beef mixture.
  • To make cleanup easier, use parchment paper to line your baking sheet.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste – more steak seasoning or a pinch of garlic powder can enhance flavor.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
