Description

This Good Old Fashioned Mac and Cheese recipe is a comforting classic that combines creamy cheese sauce with perfectly cooked elbow macaroni, baked to golden bubbly perfection. It’s an easy, family-friendly dish that brings nostalgic flavors and rich, cheesy goodness to your table.

Ingredients

Scale

Pasta

  • 3 cups dry elbow macaroni

Cheese Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 2 (370 mL/12 oz) cans evaporated milk
  • 1/3 cup milk of choice
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 4 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Cook Macaroni: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the elbow macaroni until al dente, about 7-8 minutes. Drain well and immediately stir in the salted butter until melted and combined.
  2. Prepare Milk Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together evaporated milk, milk of choice, eggs, and garlic salt until smooth and well combined.
  3. Assemble the Dish: In a greased baking pan, layer the macaroni evenly. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses over the macaroni, then pour the milk and egg mixture evenly on top.
  4. Bake: Sprinkle the top with paprika for color and flavor. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes or until the mac and cheese is golden brown on top and bubbling around the edges.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded cheese for the best melting and texture.
  • You can substitute milk of choice with whole milk, skim milk, or any plant-based milk according to preference.
  • Do not overcook the macaroni in the boiling stage to prevent mushy texture after baking.
  • Allow the baked mac and cheese to rest for 5 minutes before serving to thicken and set.
