Description

This Hawaiian Roll French Toast recipe offers a delightful twist on traditional French toast by using sweet and soft Hawaiian rolls. Perfect for a comforting breakfast or brunch, these golden, custardy toasts are infused with cinnamon and vanilla, cooked to a perfect crisp on a skillet, and served warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit for an indulgent treat.

Ingredients

Scale

French Toast Mixture

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Bread

  • 12 Hawaiian rolls, sliced in half

For Cooking

  • Butter or oil, for greasing skillet

Optional Toppings

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh fruit (such as berries or sliced bananas)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the custard mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  2. Slice the rolls: Cut each of the 12 Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, so you have 24 halves ready to be soaked.
  3. Heat the skillet: Place a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease it with butter or oil to prevent sticking and add flavor.
  4. Soak the roll halves: Dip each roll half into the egg custard mixture, allowing it to soak briefly on both sides to absorb the flavors without becoming soggy.
  5. Cook the French toast: Transfer the soaked roll halves to the preheated skillet and cook each side for about 2–3 minutes, or until golden brown and slightly crispy.
  6. Repeat cooking: Remove cooked French toast from skillet and continue dipping and cooking the remaining roll halves, adding more butter or oil as needed to keep the surface greased.
  7. Serve warm: Plate the French toast and serve immediately topped with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and fresh fruit if desired for a complete, delicious breakfast experience.

Notes

  • Do not soak the Hawaiian rolls for too long to avoid sogginess; a quick dip on both sides is ideal.
  • Adjust the heat as necessary while cooking to prevent burning and ensure the French toast cooks evenly.
  • Use a non-stick skillet or a well-seasoned griddle for best results.
  • Optional toppings can be varied according to taste, including nuts, whipped cream, or different syrups.
  • This recipe can be doubled or halved depending on servings needed.
