Ingredients
Scale
French Toast Mixture
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
Bread
- 12 Hawaiian rolls, sliced in half
For Cooking
- Butter or oil, for greasing skillet
Optional Toppings
- Maple syrup
- Powdered sugar
- Fresh fruit (such as berries or sliced bananas)
Instructions
- Prepare the custard mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Slice the rolls: Cut each of the 12 Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, so you have 24 halves ready to be soaked.
- Heat the skillet: Place a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease it with butter or oil to prevent sticking and add flavor.
- Soak the roll halves: Dip each roll half into the egg custard mixture, allowing it to soak briefly on both sides to absorb the flavors without becoming soggy.
- Cook the French toast: Transfer the soaked roll halves to the preheated skillet and cook each side for about 2–3 minutes, or until golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Repeat cooking: Remove cooked French toast from skillet and continue dipping and cooking the remaining roll halves, adding more butter or oil as needed to keep the surface greased.
- Serve warm: Plate the French toast and serve immediately topped with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and fresh fruit if desired for a complete, delicious breakfast experience.
Notes
- Do not soak the Hawaiian rolls for too long to avoid sogginess; a quick dip on both sides is ideal.
- Adjust the heat as necessary while cooking to prevent burning and ensure the French toast cooks evenly.
- Use a non-stick skillet or a well-seasoned griddle for best results.
- Optional toppings can be varied according to taste, including nuts, whipped cream, or different syrups.
- This recipe can be doubled or halved depending on servings needed.
