Description

These Irish Soda Bread Scones are a delightful twist on traditional soda bread, perfect for a cozy breakfast or teatime treat. Tender and slightly sweet, they are quick to make and even quicker to disappear!

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Additional Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp caraway seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in Butter: Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add Additional Ingredients: Stir in raisins or currants (and caraway seeds if using).
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  6. Knead and Shape: Turn the dough onto a floured surface, knead lightly, pat into a circle, and cut into wedges.
  7. Bake: Place wedges on the baking sheet and bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool and Serve: Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Best served warm with butter and jam.
  • For a sweeter variation, brush tops with cream and sugar before baking.
  • Freeze well—reheat in a warm oven before serving.
