Description

This Marinated Tofu recipe infuses firm tofu with a flavorful blend of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, maple syrup, garlic, and ginger. After pressing out excess moisture, the tofu is marinated to absorb the savory, tangy, and slightly sweet marinade. Pan-fried until golden and crispy, this tofu makes a perfect protein addition to rice, noodles, or salads, offering a delicious and easy way to enhance tofu’s natural flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Tofu

  • 1 block firm tofu (14 oz), drained and pressed

Marinade

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

Optional Garnishes

  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon green onions, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Drain and press the tofu to remove excess moisture by wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel, placing a heavy object on top, and pressing for 15–20 minutes to ensure it can absorb the marinade better and achieve a crispier texture when cooked.
  2. Make the Marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, maple syrup or honey, minced garlic, and grated fresh ginger until all ingredients are well combined, creating a savory and slightly sweet marinade.
  3. Marinate the Tofu: Cut the pressed tofu into cubes or slices as desired. Place the tofu in a shallow dish or zip-top bag, pour the marinade over it, toss gently to coat all pieces evenly, and refrigerate for 30 minutes up to 2 hours to allow the flavors to infuse deeply.
  4. Cook the Tofu: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a small amount of oil. Add the marinated tofu pieces and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side until the exterior is crispy and golden brown, turning carefully to avoid breaking the tofu.
  5. Serve: Remove the tofu from the skillet and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve the marinated tofu hot over rice, noodles, or salad for a delicious, protein-packed meal.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu is crucial for removing excess moisture and achieving a firmer texture that absorbs marinade well and crisps nicely during cooking.
  • Marinating the tofu for longer (up to 2 hours) enhances the depth of flavor but 30 minutes is sufficient for quick preparation.
  • You can substitute maple syrup with honey for a different sweetness profile.
  • Use firm tofu for best results; silken or soft tofu will not hold shape during cooking.
  • This dish is versatile and can be adapted to vegan by using maple syrup instead of honey.
  • For a gluten-free version, ensure the soy sauce used is gluten-free tamari.
