Ingredients
Scale
Meat
- 400g spicy breakfast sausage (or your favorite sausage)
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Other
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme or sage (optional)
- Mustard or ketchup for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Prepare sausage portions: Divide the 400g of spicy breakfast sausage into 8 equal portions and shape each into a small sausage or patty for uniform cooking.
- Cut the pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet and cut it into 8 rectangles large enough to fully wrap each sausage portion.
- Add seasoning: Place each sausage onto a puff pastry rectangle and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or sage if you want to add herbal flavor.
- Wrap the sausages: Carefully wrap the puff pastry around each sausage, sealing the edges with a small amount of beaten egg to help the pastry hold together during baking.
- Arrange on tray: Place the wrapped sausages seam-side down on the prepared baking tray to maintain shape while baking.
- Brush egg wash: Brush the tops of the wrapped sausages with the remaining beaten egg to achieve a beautiful golden and shiny finish once baked.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the puff pastry is puffed and golden brown and the sausage is fully cooked through.
- Serve: Serve the sausage griddlers warm with mustard or ketchup on the side for dipping, if desired.
Notes
- Make sure the puff pastry is thawed properly to avoid tearing when rolling.
- Spicy sausage can be substituted with any favorite sausage type for different flavor profiles.
- Herbs such as thyme or sage are optional but add a wonderful aroma and taste.
- Ensure sausages are cooked thoroughly by checking internal temperature or cutting one open after baking.
- These can be made ahead and reheated in the oven to keep pastry crisp.
