Description

Sour Cream and Onion Party Potatoes are a creamy, flavorful side dish perfect for holiday gatherings or any party. Made with tender russet potatoes, rich sour cream, and a zesty dry onion soup mix, this ultimate comfort food combines cheddar cheese and green onions for extra richness and a burst of freshness.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and diced

Dairy & Cheese

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Seasonings

  • 1 packet (1 ounce) dry onion soup mix
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste

Garnish

  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Boil Potatoes: Place the diced potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold salted water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook for 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes are fork tender.
  2. Drain and Mash: Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the warm pot. Add the butter and allow it to melt. Mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.
  3. Mix Ingredients: Stir in the sour cream, milk, dry onion soup mix, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Add Cheese: Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and incorporated into the potatoes.
  5. Serve and Garnish: Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving dish and garnish with chopped green onions before serving.

Notes

  • For extra richness, add an additional 1/4 cup sour cream.
  • These potatoes can be made ahead and kept warm in a slow cooker on low heat for up to 2 hours.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheated gently with a splash of milk.
