Description

A classic Banana Tarte Tatin featuring caramelized bananas topped with flaky puff pastry, baked to golden perfection. This elegant dessert combines the rich sweetness of caramel with the soft texture of ripe bananas, all enveloped in buttery, crispy pastry. Perfect for a sophisticated yet simple treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Banana Tarte Tatin Ingredients

  • 4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it reaches the correct temperature by the time the tart is ready to bake.
  2. Caramelize the Bananas: In an ovenproof skillet, melt the 1/4 cup of unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the 1 cup of granulated sugar and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar melts and turns a golden brown color. Carefully add the sliced bananas along with 1 tsp vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the bananas soften and become beautifully caramelized.
  3. Assemble the Tart: Roll out the puff pastry sheet to the size of your skillet. Place the rolled-out puff pastry over the caramelized bananas in the skillet. Gently tuck the edges of the pastry down inside the skillet to create a neat border.
  4. Bake: Transfer the ovenproof skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Bake until the puff pastry is golden brown, puffy, and fully cooked through.
  5. Invert and Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the tart to rest for a few minutes. Carefully invert the skillet onto a serving plate so the caramelized bananas are on top. Serve the Banana Tarte Tatin warm for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • Use ripe bananas for optimal sweetness and softness.
  • Be careful when handling caramelized sugar as it can burn quickly and cause burns.
  • If your puff pastry is frozen, thaw it in the refrigerator before rolling out.
  • Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent dessert.
