Description

Beijing-Style Sweet Bean Egg Rolls offer a delightful twist on traditional egg rolls, featuring a sweet red bean paste filling wrapped in crispy fried egg roll wrappers. This recipe combines the satisfying crunch of perfectly fried wrappers with the smooth, sweet flavor of red beans, making it an irresistible dessert or snack that can be prepared in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 cup sweet red bean paste (store-bought or homemade)

Wrapper

  • 8 egg roll wrappers

Frying

  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

Topping

  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wrapper and Filling: Lay an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface with one corner facing you. Place 2 tablespoons of sweet red bean paste in the center of the wrapper.
  2. Roll the Egg Rolls: Fold the bottom corner of the wrapper over the filling, then fold in the sides. Roll the wrapper tightly away from you to form a sealed egg roll. Use a little water to seal the edge if necessary.
  3. Repeat: Repeat the process with the remaining wrappers and filling until all are prepared.
  4. Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying.
  5. Fry the Egg Rolls: Carefully add 2-3 egg rolls to the hot oil, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry each batch for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  6. Drain Excess Oil: Remove the fried egg rolls with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  7. Dust and Serve: Once all the egg rolls are fried and drained, dust them with powdered sugar and sprinkle ground cinnamon on top if desired. Serve warm for best taste.

Notes

  • Be careful not to overcrowd the pan during frying to maintain the oil temperature and ensure crispy egg rolls.
  • Use a thermometer to monitor oil temperature for perfect frying results.
  • If you prefer a less sweet treat, reduce the amount of powdered sugar dusted on top.
  • Ensure the egg roll wrappers are sealed well with water to prevent filling from leaking during frying.
  • Leftover egg rolls can be reheated in an oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
