Ingredients
Scale
For the Caramelized Onions
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
For the Flatbreads
- 4 small flatbreads or naan
- 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For Garnish
- 1 tablespoon balsamic glaze for drizzling
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and salt, cooking slowly while stirring occasionally for about 20 minutes until the onions soften and begin to turn translucent.
- Add Flavorings: Stir in sugar, minced garlic, and thyme. Continue cooking for another 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized, developing a rich, sweet flavor.
- Preheat Oven: While onions finish cooking, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the flatbreads.
- Assemble Flatbreads: Place the flatbreads on a baking sheet. Evenly spread the caramelized onions over each flatbread. Sprinkle crumbled feta and shredded mozzarella cheese on top, then season with black pepper.
- Bake: Bake the assembled flatbreads in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cheeses have melted beautifully and the edges of the flatbreads turn crisp and slightly golden.
- Finish and Serve: Remove from the oven and immediately drizzle the balsamic glaze over the flatbreads. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Serve warm to enjoy the perfect blend of flavors and textures.
Notes
- You can substitute goat cheese for feta if you prefer a creamier texture and tangier flavor.
- Both store-bought flatbreads and homemade dough work great for this recipe.
- For a fresh, peppery finish, add a handful of arugula on top of the flatbreads after baking.
