Ingredients
Scale
Hash Brown Crust
- 16-ounce bag shredded hash browns, frozen
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup (5 ounces) finely diced butternut squash
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- ¾ cup (3 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
Beef Filling
- 1 medium onion, very finely diced
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- ½ cup beef broth
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the pie.
- Prepare Hash Brown Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the frozen shredded hash browns, oil, salt, pepper, milk, diced butternut squash, garlic powder, additional pepper, and half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Mix until all ingredients are evenly incorporated to form the crust mixture.
- Form the Crust: Press the hash brown mixture evenly into the bottom and up the sides of a greased 9-inch pie dish, creating a sturdy crust base.
- Cook Onions and Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the finely diced onion until translucent. Add the ground beef, salt, and garlic powder, cooking until the beef is browned and fully cooked through, breaking it up as it cooks.
- Add Flavorings: Stir in ketchup and mustard to the beef mixture, combining well to infuse the flavors.
- Thicken Filling: In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with beef broth until smooth. Pour this mixture into the skillet with the beef and onions, continuing to cook and stir until the filling thickens slightly.
- Assemble Pie: Spoon the beef mixture evenly over the hash brown crust in the pie dish. Sprinkle the remaining shredded sharp cheddar cheese evenly on top.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. This helps the pie set for easier serving.
Notes
- Frozen hash browns should be thawed slightly to help them bind better with other ingredients.
- Butternut squash adds natural sweetness and moisture—make sure it is finely diced to cook evenly.
- You can substitute cheddar cheese with your favorite melting cheese such as Monterey Jack or Colby.
- For a spicier twist, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the beef mixture.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best texture.
