Description

This Chinese Chicken and Broccoli Stir Fry is a quick and flavorful dish featuring tender chicken breast and crisp broccoli florets tossed in a savory sauce made with soy, oyster sauce, and a hint of ginger and garlic. Perfect for a healthy weeknight dinner, it comes together in just 30 minutes and can be served over rice or noodles for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Marinade

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • Pinch of black pepper

Stir Fry Sauce

  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated

Oils and Garnishes

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • Cooked white rice or noodles for serving
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
  • Sliced green onions (optional, for garnish)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken Marinade: In a bowl, combine 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon cornstarch, and a pinch of black pepper. Add the thinly sliced chicken breast and marinate for 10 minutes to enhance flavor and tenderize the meat.
  2. Make the Stir Fry Sauce: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, the remaining cornstarch, chicken broth, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes if using. Set this sauce mixture aside.
  3. Cook the Broccoli: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until they turn bright green and are slightly tender. Remove the broccoli from the pan and set aside.
  4. Cook the Chicken: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the same skillet. Add the marinated chicken and cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring frequently, until the chicken is fully cooked and no longer pink.
  5. Add Garlic and Ginger: Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger with the chicken. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  6. Combine Broccoli and Chicken: Return the cooked broccoli to the skillet with the chicken and stir to combine all ingredients evenly.
  7. Add the Sauce and Thicken: Pour the prepared sauce over the chicken and broccoli mixture. Stir continuously for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats everything uniformly.
  8. Serve: Remove from heat and serve the stir fry hot over cooked white rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired for extra flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • For a spicier dish, increase the amount of red pepper flakes or add a dash of chili sauce.
  • You can substitute chicken breast with chicken thighs for a juicier texture.
  • Broccoli can be replaced or combined with other vegetables such as bell peppers or snap peas for variety.
  • Adjust the soy sauce quantity to taste, especially if using regular soy sauce instead of low-sodium.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, add an extra half teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with water before adding it to the skillet.
