Description

These Cinnamon French Toast Bites are delightful bite-sized morsels of crispy, golden bread coated with a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture and served warm with maple syrup. Perfect for a quick breakfast or a cozy snack, they offer a wonderful contrast of textures with a soft interior and a lightly sautéed, crispy exterior, easily made in just 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 4 thick slices of slightly stale white bread (1″/2.5cm thick)

Egg Mixture

  • 2 large eggs (or 3 small eggs)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Pinch of salt

Cinnamon Sugar

  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder

Other

  • 3 tbsp butter, separated
  • Maple syrup to serve

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Cut the crusts off the slightly stale bread slices, then cut each slice into 9 equal cubes. Using stale bread helps the cubes hold their shape and prevents sogginess when dipped in the egg mixture.
  2. Make the Egg Mixture: Whisk together the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt in a medium bowl until thoroughly combined, creating a rich base for the bread cubes.
  3. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: Mix the white sugar and cinnamon powder in a shallow bowl, ensuring the cinnamon is evenly distributed for consistent coating.
  4. Melt the Butter: In a fry pan over medium-high heat, melt 1½ tablespoons of butter. Take care to avoid browning the butter to prevent any bitter flavor.
  5. Cook First Batch: Quickly toss half of the bread cubes in the egg mixture, shaking off excess. Place the coated cubes in the hot pan and sauté, stirring frequently with a wooden spoon, until golden brown on all sides, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Coat in Cinnamon Sugar: Immediately transfer the cooked bread cubes from the pan to the cinnamon sugar mixture, tossing gently to coat them evenly. Then transfer these to a serving plate.
  7. Repeat Process: Repeat the dipping, cooking, and coating steps with the remaining bread cubes, adding the remaining butter to the pan as necessary.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the cinnamon French toast bites warm with maple syrup for dipping, enjoying the mix of crispy, sugary exterior and soft interior.

Notes

  • Using slightly stale bread helps keep the cubes intact and prevents sogginess.
  • Do not brown the butter during cooking to avoid a bitter taste in the French toast bites.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
  • Maple syrup adds a perfect touch of sweetness but is optional based on preference.
