- 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)
- 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt
- 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon oil, for frying
For the Gravy
- 1 large onion, chopped (divided, with 1/4 cup for steaks)
- 2 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 2 1/2 cups beef broth
- 2 1/2 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon whole grain mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Parsley, to garnish
- Creamy mashed potatoes, to serve
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the onion and mushrooms. Set aside 1/4 cup of the onion for the steaks and finely chop the remaining onion and mushrooms for the gravy.
- Make the Steaks: In a large bowl, combine the 1/4 cup finely chopped onion, finely chopped mushrooms, ground beef, egg, panko breadcrumbs, tomato paste, whole grain mustard, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke (if using), kosher salt, black pepper, and onion powder. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
- Shape the Patties: Divide the mixture and shape it into six oval patties, ensuring they are evenly sized for consistent cooking.
- Cook the Steaks: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 2 minutes on each side or until nicely browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Prepare the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and the remaining chopped onions and sauté for about 5 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and sauté for another minute to release its aroma.
- Make the Gravy: In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and flour until smooth. Slowly pour this mixture into the skillet while continuously whisking to avoid lumps. Add the teaspoon of whole grain mustard and tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, and cook the gravy for about 2 minutes until it begins to simmer and thicken.
- Finish Cooking the Steaks: Return the browned steaks to the skillet with the gravy. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the steaks to cook through and the gravy to further thicken and develop flavor.
- Serve: Sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the steaks and serve immediately with creamy mashed potatoes for a complete, comforting meal.
Notes
- Liquid smoke is optional but adds a great smoky depth to the patties if used.
- For best texture, avoid overmixing the ground beef mixture when forming patties.
- To make this dish gluten free, substitute panko breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs and use gluten-free flour for the gravy.
- Use low sodium beef broth to control the sodium levels in the gravy.
- The steaks can also be cooked fully in the gravy by simmering longer if preferred.
