Ingredients
Scale
Hash Browns
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 20 ounces frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Sausage and Vegetables
- 1 pound ground pork sausage
- 8 ounces diced ham
- 1 medium white onion, diced
- 1 medium red bell pepper, diced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Finishing
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Cook the Hash Browns: Melt 4 tablespoons of salted butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thawed 20 ounces of frozen shredded hash browns, then season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Cook with minimal flipping until the hash browns are golden brown and crispy, approximately 10-12 minutes. Once cooked, remove them from the skillet, set aside, and wipe out the pan.
- Cook the Sausage and Vegetables: In the same large skillet, add 1 pound of ground pork sausage and cook it for about 5 minutes, breaking it into crumbles as it browns. Stir in 8 ounces of diced ham, 1 diced medium white onion, and 1 diced medium red bell pepper. Season with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, for 6-8 minutes until the vegetables are softened and lightly browned.
- Combine Hash Browns and Meat: Return the cooked hash browns to the skillet and gently fold them into the sausage and vegetable mixture to combine everything evenly. Once mixed, turn off the heat.
- Melt the Cheese: Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the mixture in the skillet. Allow the heat from the skillet to melt the cheese, which should take about 2-3 minutes. Serve immediately while hot.
Notes
- For crispier hash browns, avoid stirring them too often while cooking so they can brown properly.
- You can substitute ground pork sausage with turkey sausage for a leaner option.
- If desired, add diced green chilies or jalapeños for a spicy kick.
- This recipe can be doubled easily for larger groups.
- Use freshly shredded cheese instead of pre-shredded for better melting.
