Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Seasoning
- 1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
- 1 packet taco seasoning
- 1 cup water
Taco Shells and Cheese
- 8 taco shells (hard or soft tortillas)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Fresh Toppings
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/4 cup sliced jalapeños (optional)
- 1 avocado, sliced (optional)
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (for garnish)
Other Toppings
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- Hot sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Heat the ground beef. In a large skillet, drizzle olive oil and heat over medium heat. Once hot, add the ground beef and use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks.
- Cook beef thoroughly. Continue cooking the beef for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and no longer pink.
- Drain excess fat. Remove any excess fat from the skillet to prevent greasy tacos.
- Add seasoning and water. Sprinkle in the taco seasoning packet and add 1 cup of water as per packet instructions. Stir to combine.
- Simmer the mixture. Bring the beef mixture to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat oven (for hard shells). If using hard taco shells, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Skip this step for soft tortillas.
- Crisp taco shells. Place hard shell tacos on a baking sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes until crispy and golden. Monitor closely for burning.
- Warm soft tortillas. For soft tortillas, warm them in a dry skillet for 30 seconds per side or wrap in foil and warm in the oven for a few minutes.
- Assemble tacos. Spoon a generous amount of the beef mixture into each taco shell.
- Add cheese. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the beef, letting the heat melt it slightly.
- Add fresh toppings. Layer shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and jalapeño slices if desired over the cheese.
- Finish with sour cream. Add a dollop of sour cream on each taco for a creamy texture.
- Add optional extras. Top with sliced avocado and garnish with chopped fresh cilantro for added flavor and color.
- Present tacos. Arrange the loaded tacos on a serving platter or individual plates attractively.
- Serve with extras. Offer hot sauce and additional toppings like extra cheese, salsa, or guacamole on the side for customization.
- Enjoy! Share and enjoy your delicious loaded cheesy tacos with family and friends!
