Ingredients
For the Dumplings
- Rice paper wrappers – 10 pieces
- Shredded cabbage – 1 cup
- Carrots, grated – 1 cup
- Green onions, chopped – 1/2 cup
- Fresh cilantro – 1/4 cup
- Soy sauce – 2 tablespoons
- Sesame oil – 1 tablespoon
- Salt – to taste
For Serving
- Dipping sauce of choice (soy sauce, chili sauce, or hoisin sauce recommended)
Instructions
- Soften Rice Paper Wrappers: Begin by soaking each rice paper wrapper in warm water for about 10-15 seconds until they become soft and pliable. Be careful not to soak them too long to avoid tearing.
- Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded cabbage, grated carrots, chopped green onions, fresh cilantro, soy sauce, sesame oil, and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the flavors.
- Fill and Roll Dumplings: Lay one softened rice paper wrapper flat on a clean surface. Place a spoonful of the prepared vegetable filling in the center. Fold the sides of the wrapper over the filling, then roll tightly to form a neat dumpling. Repeat this process with the remaining wrappers and filling.
- Steam Dumplings: Arrange the rolled dumplings in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking. Steam over boiling water for approximately 10 minutes until the wrappers are fully translucent and the filling is tender.
- Serve: Transfer the dumplings to a serving plate and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Use warm water, not hot, to soak the rice paper to prevent tearing.
- Be gentle when rolling to avoid puncturing the wrappers.
- Customize the filling by adding mushrooms, tofu, or other finely chopped vegetables.
- Serve immediately after steaming for the best texture.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated by steaming.
