Dough Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Egg Wash
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, melted butter, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until well combined.
- Combine Yeast Mixture: Add the frothy yeast mixture to the large bowl and mix thoroughly.
- Add Flour Gradually: Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until a soft dough forms. Add extra flour if the dough feels too sticky.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape Rolls: Punch down the dough, divide into 12 equal pieces, and roll each into a smooth ball.
- Arrange Rolls: Place the dough balls on a greased baking sheet or pan with some space between each for expansion.
- Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes until doubled in size.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Prepare Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water for the egg wash.
- Apply Egg Wash: Brush the top of each roll with the egg wash to give a glossy finish.
- Bake Rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and allow rolls to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Ensure water used to activate yeast is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
- Adjust flour quantity as needed to achieve a soft but kneadable dough.
- Allowing the rolls to rise twice ensures a soft, fluffy texture.
- The egg wash gives the rolls a beautiful, shiny golden crust.
- You can store leftover rolls in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- These rolls can be enjoyed plain or with butter, jam, or your favorite spread.
